Silver Linings Playbook

A fun, snappy and smartly written romantic comedy directed by David O. Russell. This film captured the hearts of many, and snagged the Best Actress Oscar for Jennifer Lawrence’s exceptional performance. Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro, Jacki Weaver and the entire cast give a dynamic and heartfelt look into dysfunctional family issues and how the bond of love keeps them together through pain and triumph. 2012, USA.

Apollo 13

One of the finest films to have been produced in the 1990s, this story follows Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks) and his crew as they find themselves in a crippled Apollo spacecraft on their way to the Moon – 250,000 miles from home. Through repeated life-threatening situations, the three men (and the hundreds of those at NASA in the US) fight for their survival in returning back to Earth. Nominated for Best Picture in 1995, this film is so well designed that you’ll forget that they didn’t film this in outer space….or did they? 1995, USA

That Evening Sun

Written and directed by Scott Teems, That Evening Sun tells the tale of Abner, an aging man who breaks out of an elderly home to return back to his farm, only to find it sold by his son to a family behind Abner’s back. What follows is a tense and raw look into land, neighbors and blood-ties. Filmed in the heartland of Tennessee, it has the feeling of a classic Southern drama (think In the Heat of the Night). Powerful and incredibly well-acted – in particular by acting master Hal Halbrook, That Evening Sun will leave you on edge. 2009, USA.
