CHECK IT OUT! THE NEW, THE CLASSIC, THE OBSCURE – THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF RENTALS

Alex Barker

This week? HATS! Steven Spielberg once said that each hat he wears tells a different story or experience. The same holds true for these adventures available to rent!

The Adjustment Bureau, 2011

Part romance, part thriller, and part morality play, this fascinating and engaging tale follows the story of David Morris (Matt Damon), a young politician whose path runs into Ellis Sellas (Emily Blunt) a world-renowned dancer. The two are star struck, only to be separated by the Adjustment Bureau, an organization that keeps the world in line with ‘the plan’. Their hopeful romance is not part of the Bureau’s plan, but Morris and Sellas fight against their chosen fate. This leads to an entertaining thrill ride through the streets of New York, a story that is both fun and intelligent. To add, the entire Adjustment Bureau wears legit old-school fedoras. Keeping it classy.

Mary Poppins, 1953

The beloved and cherished Disney classic, this film does not only use some of the most state-of-the-art animation technology of its day, but it also shows off its technical might with an equally mighty & heartfelt story. Set in London, Mary Poppins follows the story of a nanny whose powers are not exactly ordinary. It is through her whimsy and magic that she saves a particular London family from estrangement, all the while, donning a very stylish cap.

How Green Was My Valley, 1941

Most infamously known for defeating Citizen Kane in the 1941 Oscar race, this film follows the story of a Welsh family in a mining village. The father stern, the mother gentle, the family’s upbringing is seen through the eyes of the youngest, Huw (who is a fan of wearing a particular cap). Through trial and tribulation, faith and hope, triumph and joy, separation and reunion, John Ford’s classic may not have reached the levels of Charles Foster Kane, but it nonetheless packs a cinematic punch. Donald Crisp and Sara Allgood play particularly memorable roles as father and mother of the family.
