Top Five: Halloween Costumes From the Silver Screen

Amanda Kirkham

It’s October and Halloween mania is officially upon us. I think it came up over a month ago when the first commercials aired in August! Nevertheless, I’m kicking off October with the first in a series of Halloween-related Top Fives. To start, here are my Top Five 2013 Movie-Inspired Costumes.

5. Iron Man, Iron Man 3

There weren’t a ton of new iconic characters from films this year so I suspect this will be one of the many repeats of the season. We’ll probably see a lot of Iron Man, Iron Patriot, and maybe even some of The Mandarin costumes. The Iron Man costume has been popular for a couple of years but the release of another film will most likely encourage more people to don the red and gold (or blue) suit. An interesting twist would be to go not as Iron Man but as Tony Stark (aka Robert Downey Jr.) in a business suit with some light contraption shining through the shirt.

4. The Enterprise Crew, Star Trek Into Darkness

This is another costume that isn’t new. People have been dressing up as members of the Enterprise crew since the show first aired in the 60s. It’s a popular costume at conventions, it’s simple, and you could make it pretty cheap. All you need is a dark pair of pants and a long-sleeved shirt in either yellow, blue or the dreaded red. It would also work really nicely as a group costume.

3. Monsters, Monsters University

I’m thinking these will be some of the more creative costumes this season. I’m sure we will see a lot of little Mikes and Sullys running around and I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of the other characters make an appearance. If no fraternities or sororities dress up as any of the ones from the movie, I will be disappointed. That would be a really cute group costume that requires some imaginative thinking.

2. Gatsby and Daisy, The Great Gatsby

The big movie-related couples costume of the season will probably have something to do with The Great Gatsby. Before the film even came out people were throwing 20s-themed parties and showing up to the theater in full Gatsby attire. I’m expecting to see some bob wigs with sparkly headbands and short, fringed dresses. This would be another fairly inexpensive and simple costume but once put together will look like it took a lot of effort to make.

1. Minions, Despicable Me 2

The minions of Despicable Me (1 and 2) are some of the greatest supporting characters to have popped up over the last few years. They are simple, cute, hilarious, and would make for an adorably clever costume. You could go simple and wear a yellow shirt, jeans and goggles, or you could get your own full-body minion costume that tells people exactly what you are without having to guess.
