Sequels. Take them or leave them, they often follow the trail of a successful big-budget film. And sometimes, on the rare occasion, they end up being better than the original. Here are just a few available to rent!
Toy Story 2, 1999
The tale of of Woody, Buzz and the gang continues with a laugh-out loud adventure. Woody is stolen by a toy collector, sparking a rescue mission by the rest of the toys. With new characters, great tributes to classic films and providing classic moments of its own, this Pixar feature does more than simply retread old ground. It enriches us as viewers and gives us new insight into each of these beloved characters. It is also one of the few films to ever get a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Godfather Part II, 1974
The first sequel to ever win Best Picture (can anyone guess the second sequel to win the award?). Intimate yet epic in scope, the story continues to follow Michael Corleone’s journey as the Don, while providing a parallel story of his father’s migrant journey to America. What follows is a fascinating look into the Corleone family, as well as a very engaging story of America and its new citizens in the early 20th Century. Dark, full of power and conviction, this cautionary tale of ambition, loyalty and revenge expands the world of the original in new and dynamic ways.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, 1982
Widely considered the best Star Trek story of the now 12 film series, the tale follows Kirk and his crew as they face their most menacing villain yet, Khan. Smart, genetically super-human, and an excellent quoter of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, Khan provides a villain that is both cunning and vengeful. Wrath of Khan provides us one of the more early looks into what a space travel thriller would look like, while showing us a new and dangerous part of the Star Trek universe. One of the better science fiction films made, this tale of vengeance, ingenuity, friendship and sacrifice far exceeds it’s predecessor Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
