CHECK IT OUT! THE NEW, THE CLASSIC, THE OBSCURE – THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF RENTALS

Alex Barker

For the next several weeks, as we prepare for Hollywood’s biggest weekend, Check It Out will feature films that nabbed the Best Picture Award, and a few that were short of Oscar gold glory.

 Ben-Hur, 1959

A film of biblical proportions, Ben-Hur is the quintessential epic of the 1950’s. With Charlton Heston playing the fiery Judah Ben-Hur, this story of hate, revenge and forgiveness stands as a testament to classic Hollywood storytelling. Winner of 11 Oscars, Ben-Hur is only matched in accolades by Titanic & Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Rocky, 1976

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial1982

This Spielberg-directed film lost out to a less-remembered Gandhi, but nevertheless proved to be a film that has stood the test of time. With heart and sensitivity the film tells the story of a lost alien befriending a boy and his siblings. This is one of cinema’s best of the 1980’s. A pity the Academy did not see it the same way.
